I purchased the Black Friday Canon SX130 for the perfect point & shoot camera, Canon PowerShot SX130IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 12x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 3.0-Inch LCD (Electronics)
I purchased the SX130 as a replacement for my 6 year old Kodak Easyshare. The Kodak was a great workhorse, but it was time for her to retire. I am VERY satisfied to have this Canon as the replacement!
This is not a full review; rather it’s a set of observations I got from using the camera.
-The camera is perfect for casual & amateur photography! I use it to take pictures of friends/family, as well as pretty sunsets, beautiful seafronts, and macro shots of circuit boards
-Invest in quality AA rechargeable batteries & charger! Otherwise you will find yourself hurting and frustrated with this camera. It has a 3V DC-in port that allows you to power the camera for extended periods with AC or an external battery pack. Great for time lapse setups.
-The SX130 is considerably hefty for a point & shoot style camera- around the weight of a can of soda.
-Settings are decently accessible in full manual mode, including manual focus. On the other hand, there’s a [DUMMY MODE] that locks out all buttons except shutter and zoom. PERFECT for particular people
-When filming it is possible to zoom (slowest speed). The recorded servo motor noise is noticeably audible in quiet conditions.
-It takes a LONG time for flash to recharge. Shot-to-shot time crawls in at ~1shot/sec. Not the ideal camera if you take many burst shots.
-The lens have no threads to screw a barrel on. There is a lens adapter for the SX120 that may work for this camera too.
-The scene settings are fun to play around with. Fisheye and selective color accent are fun to play around, though most effects can be replicated in post processing. It also has smile & wink detection which takes a picture whenever it detects a smile or wink. It’s pretty accurate
- Black Friday Canon SX130 There IS a working version of CHDK out for this camera! The firmware addition gives the camera much more utility (RAW files, live histogram, zebra exposure warning, 30min long shutter shots, auto bracketing setups, time lapse photography capabilities, remote sync, etc. etc.) Things you do not expect to accomplish with a compact becomes available with CHDK.
